Is it worth paying for antenatal classes?

With money being tight for everyone at the moment, it's important to consider the financial aspects of preparing for a new baby. From heating bills to food and mortgages, there are already many expenses to think about. And for parents expecting their first, second, third, fourth, or even fifth child, the costs can add up quickly. While it's easy to get caught up in choosing the right pram, car seat, next to me bed, and cot, it's also crucial to focus on preparing mentally for your little one's arrival.

During my recent visit to UWS Lanarkshire Campus, I had a conversation with first-year student midwives who have just completed their community placements. I learned that there are free NHS Antenatal classes available, but their content and availability differ. Some parents are informed that the classes are full, while others are told that they have not resumed after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Additionally, the number of free classes offered varies, with some parents receiving one class and others receiving two. This inconsistency is observed across North and South Lanarkshire. The workload of these dedicated midwives is quite heavy, and many women could greatly benefit from private prenatal classes. This is why private prenatal classes are highly recommended.

Antenatal classes provide parents-to-be with a valuable opportunity to receive education, advice, support, and form friendships before their baby arrives. Access to comprehensive information can greatly impact the birthing experience, as being aware of all available options allows individuals to make the best decisions for themselves.

While an antenatal class cannot ensure an incredible birth, it can assist you in understanding your options and making the most suitable decision for yourself and your family. This will provide you with a positive and well-informed birthing experience, along with the companionship of fellow participants you encounter along the way.

I teach weekly Bumps antenatal classes and also Bumps Couples workshops and parents always ask which should I attend. It is different for everyone because we all work in different ways. I have some that do weekly classes, some that do couples workshop and many that do both, again it is personal choice.

But which class should I choose, who will be my tribe, who will I spend my maternity leave with?

From antenatal education, Hypnobirthing, to pregnancy yoga, antenatal pilates to active birth classes or aquanatal, but which class will be the right one for you? What are you looking to gain from you choice of classes? How long do they last, is it a block or a one off workshop? You need to ensure that it suits your needs and fits into your schedule.

What if there was a class that covered most of the pregnancy disciplines mentioned above? Check out my weekly Bumps classes for a class that covers antenatal education, active birth, relaxation, breathing techniques, pregnancy yoga stretches, and some hypnobirthing techniques too.

A lot of mums that attend my Bumps weekly classes have attended in a previous pregnancy but come along to class to refresh their memory and to get some time to themselves once a week, time away from kids bedtime and to meet new mum friends.

Yes, there are local classes in Lanarkshire, specifically in Hamilton and Airdrie, that offer continuity of care, with the same instructor and venue from pregnancy through labour and birth and into baby classes. These classes provide comfort and security by allowing participants to familiarize themselves with the venue even after their world has changed with the arrival of a new baby. The purpose of teaching these classes is to create a supportive community where pregnant individuals can connect, make friends, learn, and assist each other in raising their babies. When should I start pregnancy classes?

For some individuals, pregnancy occurs rapidly, while for others it may take longer. Many face challenges and experience losses, leading them to pursue IUI or IVF treatments. During pregnancy, it is common to focus on gratitude and ensuring the well-being of the baby, but it is important to remember the need for preparation and education on childbirth. This is where attending a pregnancy class can be highly beneficial.

Most classes are best suited after 14 weeks in pregnancy. However, I advise booking the weekly Bumps Antenatal classes from around 20 weeks onwards, taking into consideration your due date. This is because the classes are held every 6 weeks, and if you don't secure your spot early enough, you may miss the opportunity. Additionally, before reaching 20 weeks, you are still adjusting to your pregnancy and the changes in your body. By 20 weeks, most of us start to notice the appearance of a baby bump.

Should birth partners come to antenatal classes?

One short answer it’s YES! A well-informed birth partner can have a significant impact on your birthing experience. It is important to book a class that includes birth partners and encourages learning together as a team. This inclusive class will teach you how to support each other and prepare for any challenges you may face. It can empower your birth partner and give them a sense of purpose, as they may otherwise feel left out.

Additionally, it provides them with an opportunity to be involved in the process, as they do not experience the physical changes and movements of the baby. Having one comprehensive class that covers everything in a single session can be beneficial, especially if you have a busy schedule leading up to the baby's arrival. I offer a couples workshop every 6 weeks that is suitable for couples to attend. For more information click HERE

Rearch, research research is the key!

We research which pram will be the best, which breast pump, which bottles or which cot/ moses basket/ next to me should we buy.
