"Bottle Feeding Realities: Navigating Parenthood's Unexpected Turns"

As a mum who initially intended to breastfeed but ended up bottle feeding, I've compiled some insights that might help others finding themselves in a similar situation. When I transitioned to bottle feeding, I had to quickly learn about the necessary equipment without prior research, as I had assumed breastfeeding would work seamlessly.

Essential bottle feeding equipment

Bottles (minimum 4 bottles)
Formula
Sterliser or sterlising tablets
Bottle draining rack
Bottle brush
Washing up liquid

Considerations:

Be prepared to switch to another style of bottle in case your baby doesn’t take to the inital one you choose.

Formula: Don't stock up too much before your baby arrives as their preference may differ. Remember, all stage 1 formulas meet strict nutritional standards.

Steriliser: Choose one that aligns with your lifestyle. I opted for a cold water sterilizer due to safety concerns with steam or microwave options while baby-wearing.

Preparation is Key: Set up a feeding station with all the necessary equipment within reach. This includes bottles, formula, a sterilizer, bottle brush, and washing-up liquid. Having everything organised will make feeding sessions easier for everyone.

Additional tips:

  • Marigold rubber gloves helped soothe my cracked hands from frequent washing. I love the Marigold sensitive skin ones due to my allergies and still use them now even though my kids are not longer on bottles.

  • If you have any Lansinoh nipple cream left over it can be great for an intensive hand treatment

  • Using a Tupperware for formula eases scooping.

  • A perfect prep machine or Nuby RapidCool flasks streamlined preparation.

  • Formula dispenser pots aided in daily prep.

  • For outings, a Nuby RapidCool and a thermos were lifesavers.

On the Go:

Navigating formula feeding away from home seemed daunting initially. Especially getting out to baby classes for the first time. However, with a rapid cooler and a trusty thermos, along with Aptamil's convenient pre-measured tabs, it became manageable.

Tip: Store your formula powder dispenser in a zip lock bag to avoid spills and sticky messes.

Saving on baby feeding equipment:

I rarely paid full price for feeding equipment. Supermarket baby events often offer discounts. I used Amazon's baby wish list feature for a 15% discount on listed items, and I capitalised on sales like Prime Day and Black Friday for bulk purchases. but always do a google search to find items at the best prices.

Self care for parents

It can be hard going with a new baby, getting to know each other, what feels like constant feeding and not much sleep so make sure you stay hydrated and nourished.

Bottle-feeding can be time-consuming, especially during those late-night feeds. Remember to stay hydrated and nourished yourself. Keep a bottle of water and some healthy snacks near your feeding area to replenish your energy levels.

Always do your research and check the prices to ensure you get the best deal!

If you have just had a baby and are looking for your first baby class to attend with your newborn baby have a look at Julie Keys Tinies Baby Massage class. It would be great to have you along. All our baby classes run in both Hamilton and Airdrie weekly.

A lovely calming baby massage class where everyone is in the same boat. It doesn’t matter if baby needs fed or changed or cries or sleeps. We are all mums, supported and finding our own way, in our own time.
